Actually, I believe that this is a engraving. Albrecht Druerer did a lot of engravings on metal plates. He rubbed special inks on the plates and then the plates and paper were pressed creating an impression where the reliefs were.

Actually, it's one in a series of 15 woodcuts that Durer created and published in 1498 as depictions of scenes from The Book of Revelations.

It is a wood cut, no metal involved except when the wood was cut into. It is based on the Book of Revalations. It's pretty dope.

The process you speak of is etching; this consists of inking up an engraved metal plate and rolling through a press with dampened paper. And this piece is in fact a woodcut!
